Everyone at ASSIST Sheffield is deeply saddened by the tragic death of 5 year old Mohammed Munib Majeedi who fell out of a ninth floor window in the OYO hotel in Sheffield on Wednesday.
Mohammed and his mother had arrived in the UK 15 days earlier from Afghanistan and were being accommodated in the hotel along with other families who had been relocated to the UK. We understand that safety concerns had previously been raised about the suitability of the hotel.
It is not acceptable that vulnerable people seeking asylum, who have already experienced trauma and suffering, are housed in unsuitable or unsafe accommodation.
ASSIST Sheffield stands ready to support all people seeking asylum in our city. We will be working with our partner organisations to respond appropriately to the current crisis in whatever ways we can.
