Richard Chessum

I was one of the founders of ASSIST in 2003 and am currently joint chair. Before then I had been involved in Sheffield Conversation Club out of which ASSIST arose. I am still a Trustee of that organisation. Over the years I served on many of the ASSIST teams, including Welfare Payments, Panel, Accommodation, Accompanying and Events, Fundraising and Awareness. My involvement has led to me visiting asylum seekers in prisons and detention centres as well as hospitals, finding them solicitors and driving them to Appeals Tribunals. In recent years I have been helping former asylum seekers who come back to me with new problems around such things as housing, schools, benefits and family re-union.
