The best thing about the experience has definitely been the people I have met, both asylum seekers and volunteers alike. I have met the widest variety of people, some great characters and even some friends. I have met people whose friendliness, positivity and charitability even in times of personal hardship for them has been extremely inspiring.
Volunteering at ASSIST gave me a huge insight into the systems and problems asylum seekers face, it allowed me to meet hundreds of asylum seekers, who otherwise I would have only read about on the news. Volunteering really opened my eyes to an overlooked group in society and gave me the opportunity to help their lives even a little which gives me an immeasurable sense of moral satisfaction. I believe my experience at help desk improved my communication in difficult environments and problem solving skills.
